The rpmsg file format refers to protected emails that have been generated using Microsoft's rights management and encryption technologies. An RPMSG file can consist of or refer to a protected email which is not accessible like a normal TXT, PDF, or DOCX file. It all depends on how the sender of the protected document has secured it and how the recipient has permission to access it. If one comes across an RPMSG attachment in Outlook, it would be advisable to start by opening the email through a Microsoft application that supports the file format. One might have to authenticate his/her identity before accessing the protected document. The fact that RPMSG files relate to message protection makes it impossible to just rename the file format.
